The essence of Alan’s work attempts to convey a spirit of place, from atmospheric scenery to reflective interiors. The wild moors, ancient rural lanes and dramatic coastlines reveal an alternative to the constant buzz and connectivity of modern life. His contemplative work closer to home, provides a metaphor for a deeper understanding of where he lives.

Alan’s home village backs onto Dartmoor and he is within easy reach of the sea, where he can experience these surroundings in all weathers. New ideas evolve from thought provoking environments, inside and further afield, creating the inspiration for his oil paintings.

 

Alan was educated at university in Plymouth and Goldsmith’s College London, fostering a lifelong interest in the Arts and Humanities. As an Art teacher for many years, he also continued to develop his painting and drawing skills. Recently Alan has adopted painting as his sole occupation, where he now regularly exhibits and holds an annual open studio..
